TPS54331DDAR
28 V, 3 A step-down DC-DC converter with integrated switch and Eco-mode in an 8-pin SO PowerPAD package.
The TPS54331DDAR is a Texas Instruments step-down DC-DC converter that delivers up to 3 amps from an input as high as 28 volts, with an integrated high-side MOSFET, a fixed 570 kHz switching frequency and an Eco-mode that improves efficiency at light load, in an 8-pin SO PowerPAD package. The wide input range suits industrial and consumer supplies that run from a 12 or 24 volt rail, and the integrated switch removes an external transistor from the design. The fixed switching frequency simplifies the design of the inductor and the output filter, and the light-load efficiency mode helps meet standby power targets. The thermal pad of the PowerPAD package carries heat to the board, which is important at the currents the part can deliver. Because it is a nonsynchronous converter, an external catch diode is used, which keeps the design simple and cost-effective for the current range. The adjustable output can be set as low as 0.8 volts, so the same part can generate the several rails a system needs. Every device is factory-traceable and ships with an import declaration, a certificate of origin and RoHS documentation. BeiLuo holds this part in regional stock and our FAE team supports power-stage layout and thermal design.
FAE Professional Review
This converter is our default recommendation for a general-purpose 12 or 24 volt to low-voltage rail up to 3 amps. It is simple to design in because the switch is integrated and the frequency is fixed, and the light-load mode helps with standby efficiency. Pay attention to the switching-loop layout and the thermal pad, because those decide the EMI and the temperature. Use an LDO after it for any sensitive analog rail.

Frequently Asked Questions
What external components does it need?
It needs an inductor, an output capacitor, a catch diode and the feedback network that sets the output voltage, as shown in the reference design. The switch is integrated.
Follow the reference layout for EMI and thermal performance.
How do I manage the heat?
Connect the PowerPAD thermal pad to a copper area on the board and calculate the junction temperature from the dissipation. The copper is the heatsink.
Validate the design under sustained load.
